RANDOM PLOT GENERATOR
Posting for the Clueless
Occasionally, for no apparent reason, posting on the Forum slows to a speed that suggests that everyone has gone on holiday. What posting occurs is normally nothing more than fluff and gossip, and for a few hundred posts nothing seems to happen other than the fact that you have to scroll a little further down the screen to see anything.
To help resolve this situation, somewhat, here are three tables that can be used to define a random situation that should suffice until someone happens to think of something better. You should chose one Major and one Minor plot element, then dip into the Gimmicks and Easter Eggs as much as you see fit (or, until people stop taking part in your clearly ludicrous storyline).
Major Plot Driver
- Hostile forces invade the Ship
- Hostile aliens with superior technology undermine the fabric of existence without anyone noticing
- Hugely powerful Pandimensional entities threaten the integrity of the Ship and crew for no apparent reason and then vanish before any reasonable conclusion can be reached by the less powerful crew
- Massive temporal/spacial disturbance erupts inside/outside the hull of the Ship and drama ensues
- Ship is used my someone/something/Disaster Area to ferry them from point A to point B without basically declaring the use of the most expensive Ship in existence as a glorified taxi
- Old plot or character is recycled and thrown at a crew that largely can't remember the original incident
- Entire plot occurs in DataSide/another reality/another timeline/an alternate state of existence/a hologram
Minor Plot Complication
- A character suffers a personal identity crisis/mental breakdown/bio-cellular decay/becomes an ordinary person
- A character suffers massive personal injury/massive luggage displacement/considerable physical change/leaves the Ship
- Two or more characters encounter an unexpected overlap between interests and fall in love/have a fight/fall out with each other
- Innuendo counts and sexual inferences increased tenfold for a short period without anything physically naughty occurring
- Characters, plot lines or dramatic events appear from another series/film/book without explanation, only to disappear, just as unexpectedly, a random number of posts later
- Strangely unsettling string of pointless out of character posts appear from people who can't work out what the current plot is
Gimmicks and Easter Eggs
- Modern day object makes an appearance but isn't recognized due to obtuse description leading to hilarious consequences
- Guest appearance by X number of characters from the works of Douglas Adams without justification
- Damage suffered or equipment lost in recent plotline is miraculously restored to assist the advance of the current storyline
- Old enemy, friend or character from the Starship Titanic novelisation makes an appearance without serving any clear purpose, other than boredom of the poster or the sudden arrival of a newbie
- Existing Ship system acquires strange new power or characteristic that was never evident before
- Rampant flurry of special effects is described to introduce or conclude an incident, purely because a poster was in a creative mood
- Events are, in part, described by an entity other than standard crewmembers such as bots, cameras, non-entities or local vermin
- One or more xenomorphs make a brief appearance to cause temporary havoc
- One or more posts describe a shadowy figure or entity who fails to make any real contribution to the current plotline
- One or more characters visit room 4acdc without any reference to what they do when they get there
- A notional SMEF occurs (rather than a server based one) resulting in the Ship changing location completely without any real justification other than providing a new branch for the struggling plot
- Someone is purged, forcibly, through an airlock
- A store on the Promenade declares a sale/discount bonanza/Blue Cross event/competition for one qay only
- Something/someone pollutes the Grand Axial Canal (First or Second-class)
- Something/someone is dropped down the Central Well and makes a visit, dead or alive, to InfoMages information booth
- A new/existing/broken/ignored arcade console on the Captain's Bridge starts making noises/flashing/smelling of ozone/vibrating
